The Top 10 People And Things We’re Afraid To Admit We Actually Think Are Funny

We’ve had enough conversations with our comedian friends to know that when a lot of them are interviewed or asked about their comedic influences, they tend to give the ‘cool’ answer rather than the honest answer. If you’re in your twenties, was Monty Python really a big comedic influence on you? Or did you actually laugh at Steve Urkel more when you were growing up? That got us to thinking. Here are the top 10 people and things we’re afraid to admit we think are actually funny.

10. Carrot Top

Why do we hate prop comics, again? We seriously can’t remember. It’s not like prop comics are rampant anymore. Carrot Top got hated so bad by his peers that nobody really even does it anymore. Yes, he looks horrifying. Yes, his “Call ATT” commercials were annoying, but his act is still funny. He just happens to make wacky stuff and brings it out of a trunk during his shows. We know we’re supposed to hate it, but we just can’t remember why.

9. Larry the Cable Guy

Hear us out on this one. Dan Whitney is a guy who created a character. Yeah, he’s a redneck character and people mistake him (much like with pro wrestling) for the actual guy. But it’s still just a guy doing a character. And ‘Git-R-Done’ has become an awful catch phrase that his dipshit fans yell out, even when he’s not performing. But that doesn’t mean the guy isn’t funny. Because he is. I don’t care who the hell you are. Or whatever he says.

8. Mike Myers

Everybody hates The Love Guru. Everybody loves Wayne’s World. The Love Guru will be forgotten, but the characters he created on SNL (Dieter, Linda Richman, Simon, Wayne Campbell, Middle-Aged Man, etc.) will live on. You’ll even forgive him for the third Austin Powers movie in due time.

7. “Asshole” by Dennis Leary

Dennis Leary got accused of ripping off cool-to-like Bill Hicks so many times, that he kind of fell out of favor with hipster comedians. But his song “Asshole” is still funny to us.

6. The Jerky Boys

Hardly anybody talks about the Jerky Boys anymore, especially after their flame kinda went out in the ’90′s. But for a lot of teenage boys who grew up in that period – a period before widespread caller identification – the Jerky Boys albums were like crank/prank calling Bibles.

5. Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood

The Wayans Brothers have had their fair share of awful movies, but Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood isn’t one of them. It’s just hard to remember the actual title.

4. Impressionists

Every time a Frank TV ad would come on, one of our buddies would groan. It’s old fashioned and easy, or whatever they would say. But you have to admit it’s still pretty impressive when it’s done well. And the Frank Caliendo clip above is pretty damn funny. We admit it.

3. Adam Sandler’s “They’re All Gonna Laugh At You!”

Somewhere along the line, it became really uncool to think Adam Sandler was funny. His album from 1993 still holds up. Several SNL alumni, including writers Conan O’Brien and Robert Smigel, are on it. You’d have to be a buffoon not to laugh.

2. Pee-wee Herman

So the guy got arrested 18 years ago for masturbating in a theater. Big deal. Have you seen Pee-wee’s Big Adventure? It’s co-written by Phil Hartman, directed by Tim Burton and it’s hilarious. Mainly because of Pee-wee’s character.

1. “Weird” Al Yankovic

It’s unfortunate that this guy is considered so lame by so many wrong people. Is it because the tricks are kind of easy? Is that he looks goofy and doesn’t try to come off ironic or hip? Try listening to “Fat” or “Amish Paradise” without laughing.
